The category encompasses discussions in forums and on social media sites, but I use the term to refer to consumer reviews posted on retail sites, on <strong>Amazon<\/strong>, and on <strong>Yelp<\/strong>\u00a0and other rating\/review sites.<\/p>\n<p>User-generated content has attained what amounts to celebrity status in ecommerce.\u00a0(The\u00a0<a title=\"On Amazon, all of a sudden everyone\u2019s a milk critic\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/08\/09\/technology\/09milk.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=pogue%20tuscan%20amazin&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\">Tuscan Whole Milk review caper<\/a>\u00a0may or may not have had a hand in its beginnings.)\u00a0By the mid 2000s, marketers were trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imediaconnection.com\/content\/9197.asp\" target=\"_blank\">harness the power of user-generated content with write-your-own-ad campaigns<\/a> and similar crowd-sourced marketing schemes, with limited success. The real value of user-generated content lies in its segregation from professional content.\u00a0Consumers <a title=\"Consumer Trust in Online, Social and Mobile Advertising Grows\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.nielsen.com\/nielsenwire\/media_entertainment\/consumer-trust-in-online-social-and-mobile-advertising-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\">value what other consumers have to say far more than they do company-produced content<\/a>, and retailers have had to accept this fact and make space for in their online presence.<\/p>\n<p>As e-commerce becomes more dependent on unique content generated by shoppers themselves, the line between amateur and professional content is blurring. This raises several questions. How can retailers interact with user-created content without losing consumer trust? Will sites without a strong review component lose their foothold in online retail?\u00a0How are reviews currently gathered and organized?
