<\/a>Amazon<\/strong> reportedly wants a smartphone to call its own. Daily Deal Media<\/strong> reported that Amazon’s goal is to bring a smartphone to market in early 2013 that would “essentially serve as an extension of the Amazon Kindle Fire” tablet.<\/p>\n

The Kindle Fire is designed to make it incredibly easy to make purchases from Amazon (surprise, surprise) and the phone would do likewise.<\/p>\n

“The device is cloaked in mystery in many ways,” business analyst Mike Randazzo told Daily Deal Media. “But the reason for so much market optimism is that the device will be the ultimate digital storefront for mobile commerce, particularly with regard to the digital content consumers want most \u2013 books, music, movies and TV shows. A smartphone tailored to these buying preferences and habits could make Amazon a major competitor in the space, chiefly among mobile users who are digital content junkies.”<\/p>\n

Plenty of Company<\/h3>\n

Amazon isn’t alone in its quest for a smartphone. Google<\/strong> bought the hardware maker Motorola Mobility<\/strong> earlier this year for $12.5 billion. And the New York Times<\/strong> reported that Facebook<\/strong> has been hiring Apple<\/strong> engineers who worked on the iPhone.<\/p>\n

“Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms,” a Facebook employee told the newspaper.<\/p>\n
