For only the second time on record, retail e-commerce reached $50 billion in the first quarter of 2013. That&#8217;s a 13 percent increase from the same period last year. Online shopping now accounts for 8 percent of all US retail sales, according to comScore. The report breaks down the most popular e-commerce categories:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Digital Content &amp; Subscriptions<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Apparel &amp; Accessories<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sport &amp; Fitness<br \/>\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Consumer Electronics<br \/>\n5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG)<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s not surprising to see digital content at the top of the list (plenty of shoppers have ditched physical CDs for <strong>iTunes<\/strong> and DVDs for <strong>Netflix<\/strong> streaming), I was surprised to see Consumer Packaged Goods (we&#8217;re talking products such as toothpaste, shampoo, and oatmeal) on the list. CPG companies can&#8217;t ignore the need for e-commerce content, particularly if they want their products to stand out from competitors on crowded digital shelves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can read
