According to a Rakuten spokesperson, the decision is primarily about investment, not about a partnership. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-20531 alignright\" alt=\"slice-logo\" src=\"http:\/\/content26.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slice-logo.gif\" width=\"225\" height=\"113\" \/>But it would be silly to assume Rakuten isn&#8217;t interested in Slice&#8217;s consumer tools.<\/p>\n<p>In the past three months, Rakuten has also <a title=\"Rakuten marketing acquires PopShops\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/rakuten-marketing-acquires-popshops-2013-08-12\" target=\"_blank\">acquired data analytics tech company <strong>PopShops<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Rakuten puts Amazon on notice with Webgistix acquisition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/briefing-room\/commerce-3-0\/playmakers\/2013\/rakuten-puts-amazon-on-notice-with-webgistix-acquisition\/\" target=\"_blank\">logistics company <\/a><strong><a title=\"Rakuten puts Amazon on notice with Webgistix acquisition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/briefing-room\/commerce-3-0\/playmakers\/2013\/rakuten-puts-amazon-on-notice-with-webgistix-acquisition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Webgistix<\/a><\/strong>. That last is thought to be a direct challenge to <strong>Amazon<\/strong>, Rakuten&#8217;s main e-commerce competitor.<\/p>\n<p>Is Rakuten&#8217;s investment in Slice part of a plan to start giving
