Though the retailer previously offered online ad services through a third party, Triad, the move shows that Walmart is getting serious about winning hard-fought ad dollars. The move puts them in direct competition with Facebook, Google, and Amazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this mean for the digital marketing landscape, and\nhow should brands respond? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Walmart Digital\nAdvertising in Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Amazon: Rising Star in Digital Advertising<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital advertising has historically been dominated by Google and Facebook. However, Amazon is striving to shift the balance with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"their own services (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/content26.com\/blog\/the-definitive-guide-to-amazon-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\">their own Amazon Advertising services,<\/a> and the ecommerce giant offers purchase data that Google and Facebook cannot match. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the retailer has by no means usurped the Big Two, Amazon has been quickly establishing its share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"299\" src=\"https:\/\/content26.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/wmt_h_r_c-1024x299.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/987654321.space\/c26_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/wmt_h_r_c-1024x299.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/987654321.space\/c26_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/wmt_h_r_c-175x51.jpg 175w, https:\/\/987654321.space\/c26_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/wmt_h_r_c-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/987654321.space\/c26_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/wmt_h_r_c-768x225.jpg 768w, https:\/\/987654321.space\/c26_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/wmt_h_r_c.jpg 1313w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With<a> <\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a 95 percent increase (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2019\/report-shows-amazon-taking-digital-advertising-market-share-google-facebook-duopoly\/\" target=\"_blank\">a 95 percent increase<\/a>&nbsp;from the previous year, Amazon reported $10.1 billion in revenue for its \u201cOther\u201d category. The retailer does not break out advertising revenue specifically, but this category \u201cprimarily includes sales of advertising services, as well as sales related to our other service offerings,\u201d according to financial statements. The trends and increases in revenue appear to be driven largely by advertising growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2019, eMarketer has predicted that Amazon\u2019s U.S. ad\nbusiness will grow by more than 50 percent, increasing its market share to 8.8\npercent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The field is also opening up, with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Kroger (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/kroger-precision-marketing-launches-boosted-products-in-search-300656546.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kroger<\/a><a><font color=\"#00a0d2\"> <\/font><\/a>(among others) recently launching its own self-service marketing platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Walmart Digital\nAdvertising in Progress<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Where does all this leave Walmart? Walmart\u2019s current advertising market share is too small to register. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Gartner\u2019s L2 estimated (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/digital\/walmart-takes-online-ad-sales-huge-blow-wpp-unit\/316689\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gartner\u2019s L2 estimated<\/a><a> <\/a>that, last year, Amazon was monetizing about 16 percent of searches on its website, while Walmart was closer to 1 percent. Additionally, content26 found that, across 10 consumer brands, Amazon consistently delivered a higher ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) when compared to Walmart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, Walmart can sell ads much closer to the point of sale than Google or Facebook. Additionally, Walmart has breadth of data where Amazon is weak, with both online and in-store shopper data. The answer\ndepends on each brand\u2019s individual situation, but here are a few things to keep\nin mind while you decide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Recognize Your Ecommerce Goals<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Take stock of your sales goals. Where does Walmart fit into your overall marketing strategy, and how does the online business feed into your growth expectations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><em>Consider Your Budget<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Where are your digital advertising dollars currently spent,\nand is there room to be flexible? Are you already running effective search and display\nads on Amazon, with room to experiment elsewhere?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a recent Retail Dive article, 57 percent of brands that sell on Amazon are advertising on the site. In these early days, there will be glitches.
